Highbury Grove School is being transformed through the Building Schools for the Future initiative. Now is an exciting time as we prepare to move into the new building after the Autumn term. The latest BSF newsletter below gives a preview of the new vision of Highbury Grove in the 21st century and the type of learning environment our students can expect.

GCSE Results

Students are celebrating their success at GCSE following some outstanding results.  33 students achieved more than double the national standard with 10 or more higher grade passes including Maths and English. 

The school has again exceeded its previous best ever results with 41.9% of students achieving the 5 or more A* - C with English and Maths.  Taken separately our girls achieved 50%.  74% of students achieved 5 or more A* - C passes. 

The top 10 performing students were:

Ryan                4A* and 4A
Mateusz           1A* and 8A
Abdulmalik       1A* and 8A

These students achieved 91 A and A* grades between them which is 79%.  Of the remaining grades 96% were at grade B.

Jonathon John a school prefect achieved 5A, 3B and 2Cs whilst combining football training at an academy with his academic studies, Ellen had the highest point score as a result of achieving 18 higher grade passes with 7 at grade A.

This year a number of students were entered for the 3 single sciences of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.  The pass rate at A* A and B was 96%.  Students taking the extra Science were tutored outside the normal curriculum.  Other students studied A/S Level languages whilst in Year 11.  61% achieved either an A or a B grade in one of 5 languages.

Most students will now confirming their place on A Level and applied courses at the school sixth form, a partner in the Islington Consortium, before they go and celebrate.

In January 2010 sixth form students will have a brand new purpose built area in the new school.

Yashir is going to Oxford


Our students are celebrating achieving their A Level results and securing their places at university.  This year students will be moving onto Universities both in and outside London.

Yashir Janoo who went to Robert Blair primary School has secured a place at Oxford University to study Physics.  In the Sixth Form he studied 5 subjects: Maths; Physics and Chemistry at A Level as well as Further Maths and Biology at A/S Level.  He achieved AAA for his A levels and BB for his A/Ss.



Melissa achieved excellent A Level results

Melissa He Meng came to Highbury Grove 5 years ago speaking no English.  Hard work and sheer determination have resulted in her achieving excellent A Level results.  Her subjects were: Maths; Further Maths; Chinese and Physics for A Levels with IT as an A/S.  Her grades were ABCE and C.  Although her offer was for Kings, Melissa has decided to attend City University to continue studying Maths.

Akram Choudhoury is now going to Loughborough after achieving AAC in his Maths, Economics and History A Levels with a C in English A/S.

Ex Student Returns to Teach

We are delighted to welcome back this term Duane Riggs-Long to the school.  Duane was a student from 1999 – 2006.  Whilst in the Sixth Form Duane studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A Level and Biology at A/S.  He achieved AAAAA and for the last 3 years he has been at Imperial College studying Maths. 

Duane now wants to become a teacher so will commence his training at Highbury Grove.  He joins the Maths department which again this year has achieved excellent results at KS3, KS4 and KS5.

ofsted says Highbury Grove is a good school

OFSTED – the Office for Standards in Education - has published the findings of its recent inspection of Highbury Grove secondary school and has ranked the overall school performance as good.

Cllr Ursula Woolley, Islington Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People, said: "Many congratulations to all staff, pupils and governors at Highbury Grove School. This positive Ofsted report shows how Islington schools are improving year on year. The work that everyone at Highbury Grove has done to turn the school around is a real credit to the borough - and the future looks even brighter, as the school will be one of the first to benefit from the Building Schools for the Future programme."

Update on our New School

There have been many activities taking place including:
  • An open meeting for parents to explain about rebuilding our school.
  • Planning consent has been given to demolish the present buildings and to re-develop the site.
  • Governors have met regularly to discuss ideas.
  • Staff have contributed their ideas through a 2 day conference.
  • A school vision document for the future has been written.

We are now working with a number of consultants who will help us through the process. Our aim is to achieve an educational environment that is safe and inspiring as well as fit for purpose in the 21st century and a school that everyone is very proud of.
